Archaeology of the Eastern Indian Ocean: Prehistoric and Early Historical Exchange from the Iranian borders to the South China Sea.

Cross-border migration and trafficking are, once again, the focus of intense scrutiny in Southeast Asia. There is a very rapidly increasing number and frequency of informally and illegally migrating persons and the goods they transport and consume. The area of the present research, undertaken during 2009, is currently known as the Quadrangle (Quadripartite) Economic Cooperation Zone, or the Golden Quadrangle. It has been targeted as a special economic cooperation zone, comprising Yunnan Province of China, Luang Nam Tha Province of Northern Laos, Shan State of Northern Myanmar, and Chiang Rai Province of Northern Thailand. The scope of this localisation of small-scale manufacturing and production, and of its logistics—cross-border informal and illegal transport—is vast. The goods surveyed in this research were agriculture products, including herbicides, fertilisers, and pesticides whose contents were unknown or clearly toxic beyond the regionally-agreed standard; there is special reference to illegal logging and timber trafficking from the same regions.  The research team consisted of five individuals: the present author, an environmental chemist from Japan, one environmental chemist from Taiwan, a social scientist from Taiwan, and an economist from Myanmar.

Abstract
The Trade in Human Beings for Sex in Southeast Asia brings together 28 senior scholars and experts hailing from all over the world in various disciplines: Ethnology and Social Anthropology, Sociology, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, Psycho-Criminology, Medicine, Law, Economics, History, as well as Humanitarian assistance to give a general statement on slavery, prostitution and trafficking in persons in this region. In recent years, prostitution and trafficking in women and children for the purpose of sexual exploitation have been steadily increasing at an alarmig rate. Underlying reasons are not only the ongoing process of globalization and the lagging behind of the concerned emerging economies, but also a number of cultural factors specific to this region. The problem’s background in given in Part 1: A look at the past; Part 2 provides the data from field studies in human trafficking and prostitution; Part 3 deals with additional related problems and suggests possible responses. An indispensable work covering all aspects of this complex problem and proffering suggestions to deal with it.

Vietnam Net Bridge, 18 September 2009
A museum about merchant ships will be built in Hoi An, the central province of Quang Nam, it was announced recently. Faifoo, former name of Hoi An, Merchant Ship Museum, covering more than 2.4 hectares, in Cam Pho Ward, will present images of Hoi An and the fascinating activities of the trading port in the 17th and 18th century.

Public Lecture
The maritime trade has played an integral role in Southeast Asia from ancient times, and so it’s no surprise that there are a lot of maritime museums popping up in Southeast Asia today. Dr Stephen Davies will be making a presentation this Wednesday (30 Sep 2009) on Maritime Museums at the Nalanda-Sriwijaya Centre at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies at the National University of Singapore. More details here.
