Hue begins restoration of royal tomb

The central city of Hue on Tuesday launched a VND76.34-billion (US$4.26 million) project to restore the imperial tomb of King Dong Khanh (1864-1889).

Set for completion in 2012, the restoration project is divided into two stages with the first targeting the mausoleum’s structures, including gates and palaces.
The second stage will renovate the tomb and embellish its surrounding area.
Located in Thuong Hai Hamlet of Thuy Xuan Commune, the tomb of the ninth king of Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945) was built in 1888 and renovated several times until 1923.
It is part of the Nguyen dynasty’s complex of royal tombs in the old imperial capital of Hue, recognized as a world cultural heritage site by UNESCO in 1993.
The tomb of King Dong Khanh has been closed to the public for several years owing to its rundown condition.
