"The Anthropology of Christianity in Melanesia and Beyond"
--
Although only a decade old, the anthropology of Christianity has grown rapidly.  These lectures develop some of the main themes that have dominated discussion in this area.  The themes discussed include the relationship of Christianity to processes of cultural change; the distinctive nature of Christian views of language and social mediation more generally; and the extent to which Christianity is an individualist religion that spreads the cultural value of the individual among its converts.  The first lecture introduces the anthropology of Christianity by providing a broad overview of work on these themes and also offers an argument that unifies the discussion of them around a set of claims about the distinctive way Christianity handles matters of transcendence. It draws examples from many world areas. The three lectures that follow take up change, language and mediation, and individualism in turn and offer new arguments in each area. They focus ethnographically on material from Melanesia, though each of them is framed around broad comparative issues. The series as a whole is designed not only to introduce the anthropology of Christianity and make some new arguments within it, but also to make the case that theoretical work in this field is relevant to anthropology more generally.
