
This Web archive is a collection of over 1500 sites relating to the December 2004 Tsunami disaster in Asia. A shapshot of these sites has been taken once a week starting from the first week of January 2005 in order to build an archived record of this world shattering event.
Developing the Asian Tsunami Web Archive
The tsunami that hit South and South East Asia on December 26, 2004 was the largest natural disaster of this generation. More than a quarter of a million people lost their lives, with many more injured. The destruction was spread from India to Indonesia, from Sri Lanka to Malaysia. Web producers from around the world used the Internet to provide information, features, news, services, reactions, as well as virtual memorials, for various to fill the large information void that existed right after the tragedy struck. New sites emerged, and some existing Websites took on a different role in a matter of a few hours. Starting just a few days after the first tidal wave hit, scholars affiliated with the Singapore Internet Research Center (SIRC), WebArchivist.org and the Internet Archive started identifying URLs that were directly relevant to the question of how site producers were reacting to the tsunami, and the role of the Internet in enabling people to respond to a natural disaster such as this.
